Preparing for Hinsdale Rotary's June 2018 Visit to the Rotary International Convention in Toronto, Canada

Toronto is a large city, in many ways a lot like Chicago.  In fact, most Chicagoans don't realize that the two cities are approximately the same size in population -- 2.7 million.

Toronto is a diverse, vibrant and rapidly growing town with wonderful attractions, restaurants, and a lively outdoor culture.  For the next few months, we will be listing locations that Hinsdale Rotarians may want to look into while visiting Toronto for the Rotary International Convention, June 23-27, 2018.  Here's our first suggestion:

Toronto Islands

Located just south of the city in Toronto's harbor, hop one of three ferries that run to the island all day long.
Restaurants, beaches, canoes, kayaks and bikes for rent make it a worthwhile destination while you are visiting Toronto!

Toronto Islands

The Kensington Market -- A Fun Place to Visit, and Shop

The Kensington Market is not far from the Toronto City Hall, and is right next door to one of the largest Chinatowns in Toronto (Toronto has five Chinatowns).

Kensington Market is an eclectic make up of fresh fish, meat, and produce, along with many unusual shops and boutiques that offer clothing and goods from all over the world.

An easy walk from Center City or a quick cab ride, Kensington Market is a neighborhood worth strolling while you are attending the Rotary International Convention in Toronto!

Ossington Avenue Shopping and Restaurant District

A "funky" street, west of Downtown Toronto, is Ossington Avenue.  It's lined with cool restaurants, off beat clothing stores, and several excellent art galleries.  Ossington Avenue is easily reached from Downtown on the TTC street car that runs east-west along Queen Street.  Hinsdale Rotarians should try to carve out some time to visit this very eclectic part of the New Toronto.

"The Distillery District"

Developed around a neighborhood of old whiskey distilleries, located to the east of downtown Toronto, "The Distillery District" is loaded with restaurants, galleries, and shops that make for a pleasant afternoon or evening getaway.  It will be an easy cab ride or TTC Trolley ride over to the Distillery District from the location of the RI Convention.

"Casa Loma"

Towering over the City of Toronto is the Victorian castle known as "Casa Loma" or Hill House.  It was built as a residence for flamboyant financier Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. Casa Loma was constructed from 1911 to 1914. The architect was E. J. Lennox,[1] who designed several other city landmarks. Casa Loma sits at an elevation of 140 metres (460 ft) above sea level.[2]

When in Toronton for the Rotary International Convention next June, be sure to take time to travel to the north end of the city and visit "Casa Loma".  It's well worth the trip!

Association House of Chicago receives 550 amenity kits from Hinsdale Rotary and O'Hare Rotary Clubs, September 7th, 2017

Following the recent District 6450 Conference, Member Bob Parsons obtained a Club endorsement of a project to obtain (business class) airline amenity kits from the Chicago O'Hare Rotary Club for the mobile HIV-Aids testing unit at Association House of Chicago.

After coordination with Association House and the O'Hare club, on Sept 7th, Bob arranged to pick up 550 plus kits and deliver them to Association House. AS Bob points out, this was a project of, and gift from, the Hinsdale Rotary Club and the O'Hare Rotary Club. This should be a 6 month supply for the Association House.
Well done, Bob!
